Vitamins to Take for Acne

Not everyone wishes to use treatments containing powerful active ingredients that may irritate skin and cause dryness or redness. This reluctance is totally understandable. You may be someone who wishes to try all-natural skin care products or up your daily intake of vitamins to promote healthier skin and help prevent acne. So the question is, are there vitamins for acne prevention? There are some vitamins and minerals that are believed to reduce acne related inflammation, but their direct effect on problem acne is largely scientifically unproven. With that said, I am providing some information on vitamins that could potentially help you fight against acne.

Zinc is often recommended for the treatment of acne. It is by no means a miracle cure, of course, but some users report that zinc helps to control oily skin and clears up acne. Zinc is available over the counter at most drugstores in both oral form and in a lot of topical creams and ointments.

Vitamin B3, which is also known as Niacin, is also often used to treat acne. Niacin is found in a number of common foods such as peanuts, avocados, milk, chicken and many others. Skin care products containing Niacin are readily available over the counter. A variety of skin creams and gels containing Niacin can be purchased in most drugstores and at some department store cosemtic counters.

In addition to vitamin B3 and the mineral Zinc, there are a number of other vitamins for acne that people sometimes suggest. Vitamin A is said to strengthen the skin, reduce oil production and prevent acne. Vitamin C is another vitamin that is often recommended. Vitamin C is described as having an overall anti-bacterial effect and repair damage to skin tissue. The antioxidant Vitamin E is believed to stimulate tissue repair so it is sometimes recommended for clearing up existing acne. The mineral Chromium is thought to lower infections and fight against acne. Chromium is most often taken as a supplement, due to the absorption of Chromium from food generally being quite poor.

While the need for good nutrition and getting enough vitamins and minerals every day cannot be over emphasized, whether or not there are effective vitamins for acne treatment is debatable. While I can certainly understand people’s motivations for seeking out alternative for all-natural treatments, I personally am more inclined to use products that have been proven effective over time and scientific studies. While I do believe in taking vitamin supplements to improve overall health and well-being if you are not getting in enough in your diet, I am a bit skeptical about specifically taking vitamins for acne treatment. Before seeking any sort of acne alternative treatment, upping your vitamin intake levels or taking any supplement, I would suggest speaking with your doctor, dermatologist or pharmacist.
